Spinal fellows will be exposed to a broad scope of adult and child spine surgery encompassing traumatic and non-traumatic (degenerative, deformity, neoplastic, and infectious) conditions. The Fellowship Program also includes participation in areas of research including basic science, spine fractures, deformity, education, spine surgery as well as clinical outcomes. Although the Clinical Fellowship Program has a predominantly surgical focus, Fellows are involved in all aspects of patient care and research.
The Rehabilitation Centre is one of the facilities of the “Hospital das Clínicas da Faculdade de Ribeirão Preto – USP”. The Rehabilitation Centre is specialized in the physical rehabilitation of people who have experienced a disabling physical illness or injury. The Fellowship Program includes out patient clinic, meetings and lectures at the Rehabilitation Centre, attended by doctors, nurses, physical therapist, social assistant, nutritionist and psychologist.
Spine surgery is performed in two units:
Hospital das Clínicas Campus – elective cases ( degenerative, adult and pediatric deformities , tumors surgery )
Emergency Unit – trauma patients
Fellows are expected to be in attendance at surgery to assist the Surgeon three days per week. Fellows are going to participate in the Hospital Patient Clinic once a week, every Tuesday. The Adult Spine Clinic takes from 8:00h to 13:00h and the Child Spine Clinic from 13:30h to 17:00h. For fellows with Orthopaedic training, outpatient clinics may also include fracture clinics, which encompasses both spinal and non-spinal trauma.
Call at the Emergency Unity of the “Hospital das Clinicas da Faculdade de Medicina de Ribeirão Preto” is part of the program. The responsibility of the spinal calls is of the residents of the 4th year. The Fellows with Orthopaedic training are anticipated to contribute towards both spinal call and general Orthopaedic trauma call.
As part of their program, Fellows will be free to participate actively in research and academic activities. Research projects are supervised by one of the surgeons of the spine service. Research opportunities exist in biomechanics, basic science, Epidemiology, and clinical studies. Opportunities exist for fellows that may be interested in a combined clinical and research fellowship.
There is no guest rooms inside the hospital.
