The Department of Orthopedics provides a strong spine service responsible for many of the first in India like the first Cotrel Dubousset Instrumentation for scoliosis and the first lumbar disc replacement. The Unit performs around 400-450 cases round the year (including 300-350 instrumented surgeries) for a wide gamut of spinal disorders, led by the chair, Dr Sajan K Hegde. The Spine team has a strong focus on Spinal deformities (Adult and Pediatric) and degenerative conditions followed by tumors and infections which are managed on a daily elective basis by standard as well as minimally invasive techniques.
Spine fellows can actively participate in the outpatient clinic, during ward rounds and scrub in for cases at the state of the art operation theatre. Fellows can also observe cases on the large screen inside the operation theatre and assist in neurosurgical cases if interested. Accommodation is provided for fellows and meals can be obtained in the hospital or many surrounding restaurants.
