Description

The Spinal Unit was created by Professor Jacques Sénégas in 1979.

Located on the 7th floor of the Hopital Tripode which is in the Western part of Bordeaux and a approximate 30 min drive from the Airport or from the main station. Very close to the University of Medicine which includes the Anatomy Laboratory where dissections and researches related to Spine surgery can be held.The unit dedicates 80 beds to spine surgery patients and is run by 8 senior surgeons.

Approximately 1500 spine surgeries are made per year (degenerative cervical and lumbar, trauma with and without neurologic deficit, secondary and primitive, adult and pediatric deformities).
Special interest is devoted on non-fusion (ligaments, prothesis)

 

What can a fellow expect?

Each day of he week a full spinal surgery program held in 2 operating room.
(note: fellows are able to observe as well as to scrub)

3 times/week = technical staff training
1/ week = multidisciplinary staff training
Long term fellows are allowed to participate at clinical and anatomical research studies.

No guest rooms offered by the hospital, but low cost hotels very near by.

Description

Bordeaux university hospital is the biggest hospital in Bordeaux, which today is a top level hospital with 1100 beds. The hospital is located in the west part of Bordeaux city, 15 min. from the airport. TGV train (high speed) connection with Paris within 3 hours.
The Orthopaedics department consists of three separate entities: trauma, general orthopaedics and spine unit. The spine unit is the most important in France with 90 beds Rehabilitation and Physical Therapy is integrated in the hospital and there is emergency and intensive care facilities.
Spine surgery is divided in 3 units, two for degenerative cases and one for trauma cases and other emergencies, Spine procedures per year: 1800.
main focus: degenerative, deformities (adults), trauma, tumors surgery, disc surgery, spinal decompression, disc replacement, endoscopic and video-assisted approach, navigation surgery and per-operative CT guidance with O arm.

 

What can a fellow expect?

Full time spine surgery .
Fellows who are not only interested in spine, but also in general orthopaedics and trauma, will find a wide spectrum of surgical expertise to learn from.
Fellows will be able to observe, but also to scrub.
DETERCA, Surgical research lab, located at a walking distance allows to perform basic sciences and surgical research and lab training: ant and post approach on pigs,

There is no guest rooms inside the hospital. Convenient two and three stars hotel in a walking distance from the hospital. Others facilities available for long stay at a very attractive price.
